Abstract

Abstract in english: There are many image file formats and hundreds of software programs capable of converting images. The three most common image file formats, the most important for general purposes today, are TIFF, JPG (JPEG) and RAW. There are two types of image file compression algorithms: lossless and lossy. JPEG is basically a compressed method of storing data that results in some loss of quality. RAW files, conversely, often referred to as a digital negative; retain all of the information exactly as it was recorded to the camera image sensor. RAW format provides far more control over the final appearance of the image by allowing many changes to be made. The adventage of shooting a RAW file is that you can change many of the shooting parameters after exposure such as white balance, saturation, sharpness, contrast etc. A second advantage of shooting a RAW file is that you can also perform the conversion to an 8-bit or 16-bit TIFF file. Cameras that support RAW files typically come with proprietary software for conversion of their raw image data into standard RGB images. There are many other "raw workflow applications" designed to provide efficient processing and postprocessing of raw images, such as Phase One's Capture One, Bibble Pro, Adobe Camera Raw etc.
