Abstract
Kroz cijelu povijest čovjek je želio vizualnim i drugim sredstvima obilježiti uspjehe u ratu, na ratnim pohodima i u osvajanjima drugih zemalja i naroda, osobito vladari, vojskovođe i ostali moćnici.

Abstract in english: | Throughout human history, men are witnessing a persistent desire to leave a visual record of one’s conquests in war, or in subjugation of other nations and their lands. This desire is shared by rulers, those responsible for military conquest and others who shape history. In sharp contrast, those who opposed war, rarely, if ever, had an opportunity to have their voices heard. The discovery of the camera evened the playing field somewhat. In fact, both sides now had a powerful propaganda tool at their disposal. The camera served both noble and ignoble goals. A photo camera very quickly found its way to the war zones. From there, it reported and recorded events for the military headquarters, as well as historic archives and for daily newspapers. A photograph revealed the truth, but it concealed the truth. Great abuses of photography occurred during the tenure of non-democratic, totalitarian regimes of the 20 century. There it was used to glorify the dictators and also to mobilize the people for wars of conquest. The art and science of photography in the hands of brave and skillful photo-journalists, the camera came to reveal true face of war: military and civilian casualties and terrible suffering and destruction. While it is true that camera has powerful rivals in film and video – it remains a powerful medium in its own right and it retains its power to affect countless individuals. |
