Abstract

Abstract in english: The subject of this paper is photogravure, a photo-mechanical process by which a high quality intaglio print can be reproduced from a film positive. This theory paper will describe historical development of photographic processes and printing methods that were significant for the discovery of this technique. Also, there will be guided and explained processes of making photogravure by traditional copper plate method and polymer photogravure, with an emphasis on traditional method of making photogravure, with their main characteristics including visual and microscopic characteristics and chemical analysis that are significant in identification of a photogravure print, and also a distinction of photogravure from certain techniques with similar results in reproduction. This paper will provide some of the most significant artists that were using the technique of photogravure, including a brief description of their work and contribution to development of photogravure, accompanied by photos of some of their work. The main point of this paper is a comparison of a traditional method of making photogravure and a modern version of this technique, which is a polymer photogravure method, along with their similarities and differences, advantages and disadvantages.
