Abstract

Abstract in english: | Manga is a form of a comic book typical for Japan, with the origins in early Japanese scroll art of the 8th century and woodblock prints of the 19th century Edo period. The term ''manga'' originates from satirical and comical caricatures of the painter Hokusai. Although Hokusai wasn't the first to coin the term, in his time he practiced the drawing and sketching style that would later become modern manga. Only at the beginning of 20th century did the term manga start to refer to Japanese comics. Throughout the history manga has always been influenced of society and politics of its time and was greatly impacted by western art, especially American comic books. During the World War II manga was under the influence of war propaganda but later grew into a globally popular medium that has spread into different types of media (media mix). Based off of a statement of an American artist and writer Frank Miller who notes manga is very easy to read and understand even without text, the experimental part of this work is focused on exactly that assumption. Because of its dominant and expressive visual form, manga is easy and intuitive to read and understand and therefore needs less textual content for story development (story telling) because of its primary focus on illustration. |
