Abstract

Abstract in english: | Thermochromic inks (TCI) change their colouration with change in temperature. In graphic industry thermochromic inks are used primarily in making and print of "smart" packaging for food and pharmaceutical packaging, which functions as an indicator of the product's current temperature or an out-of-boundary temperature reading. In the process of storage or display of these products the packaging may come into contact with various chemicals, which may bring into question the chemical stability and therefore functionality of thermochromic ink. Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a biodegradable polymer the characteristics of which find usage in various branches of industry. Polycaprolactone can be used as a coating on printed products in order to improve their chemical stability, as well as used alongside a low mass concentration of zinc oxide (ZnO) or titanium dioxide (TiO2) to further improve the properties of printed products. This paper aims to analyse the effect of polycaprolactone, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide on the chemical stability and colourimetric characteristics of a reversible leuco-dye-based thermochromic ink for use in offset print with the activation temperature of 45°C. The chemicals that this paper will concern itself with (water, soap, 12% and 96% ethanol solution) are chosen on the basis of the estimated possibility that the ink may come into contact with them in reallife conditions. |
