Abstract

Abstract in english: The aim of this paper is to show how effective cancel culture is, that is to say, to establish the amount of harm a single individual receives from being canceled. As well as establishing the intended harm of the process versus a more reasonable or more appropriate punishment for the perceived offense or mistake. Also, it will be investigated, whether there is a possibility to “rehabilitate” canceled individuals, and allow them to redeem themselves, and if so, how can this be achieved. A side by side comparison will demonstrate the differences between the application of cancel culture on varying people. Research will be done by collecting publicly available data to compare whether cancel culture has any negative long-lasting effects on an individual. This will primarily focus on the negative economic effect, such as lost or lack of business opportunities, reduced number of sold works, reduced number of viewers and fans. Furthermore, a survey will be conducted aimed at the target audience, which is young people, to establish their opinions regarding the topic. Due to a number of previously conducted research and surveys, it is expected that young people are the ones spearheading cancel culture in their usage, but it is not known in what numbers they support its usage in principle, and for what purpose do they think they are using it.
