Abstract

Posljednjih godina, industrija video-igara bilježi značajan rast, utoliko da snažno konkurira velikim industrijama poput filmske. Unatoč tome, oko njih i dalje kruže stereotipi kako nisu ozbiljne te da su namijenjene primarno za djecu i mlade, što je uočljivo i po kolokvijalnom nazivu „igrice“. Ipak, zahvaljujući rastu industrije i povećanju raznolikosti igara, počelo se pojavljivati pitanje: „Jesu li video-igre umjetnost?“. Stoga je namjera ovog rada skrenuti pozornost na izniman kreativan trud koji se ulaže u razvoj video-igara, često zanemaren u očima javnosti. Ne može se poreći doprinos video-igara u različitim društvenim i umjetničkim sferama, no fokus radnje stavlja se na ilustracije nastale za potrebe njihovog razvoja, tzv. concept art. U radnji se spominje podjela ilustracija ovisno o ulozi u razvoju igre i sadržaju igre koji obrađuju. Tema concept arta upotpunjena je prikazom radova istaknutih autora za različite žanrove igara i različitih stilova te prolaskom kroz nekolicinu različitih popularnih igara i analizom dizajna njihovih likova Rad obuhvaća i praktični dio posvećen dizajnu likova inspiriranih različitim opisanim žanrovima i stilovima. Izradom nekolicine ilustracija, pokušava se dokučiti i prepoznati elemente dizajna karakteristične za različite igre te način na koji određeni elementi prenose poruku o karakteru i priči vezanoj uz kreirani lik.

Abstract in english: In the last couple of years, video game industry has grown significantly, so much so it has become a strong competitor to other big industries, such as film industry. Despite that, video games are still plagued by stereotype of a frivolous form of entertainment produced primarily for children and teenagers. Nevertheless, thanks to industry’s growth and the increasing diversity in video games, many have started to discuss whether video games can be considered a form of art. Therefore, the purpose of this master thesis is to shed light upon the outstanding creative work that gets put into development of a video game, often disregarded by the public. There are lots of ways video games have made their contribution from a societal and artistic point of view, but this master thesis focuses on artistic pieces made for the purposes of their development, commonly known as “concept art”. The thesis mentions different types of concept art based on their role in the game-development process and the type of content it presents. The theme of concept art is further expanded through a look at the work of several notable professionals from the industry created for different genres with different styles, and by analysing character design from several different popular video games. The practical part of the thesis deals with the design process of several characters inspired by the different genres and styles described in the thesis. The goal is to decipher and recognize different design elements used in different games and interpret the way they convey personality traits and backstory of a character to the audience.
