Abstract
Pismo je sastavni dio jezika i mora mu se prilagođavati kao što se jezik prilagođava pismu. Prema tome u istraživanje krećem s hipotezom da nije svaka tipografija primjerena za zapisivanje hrvatskog jezika i da je važno definirati parametre (estetske parametre) koji su ključni kod oblikovanja pisma prilagođenog hrvatskom jeziku. Također, da se implementiranjem tih parametara, prilikom oblikovanja, dobiva na većoj estetskoj vrijednosti ali i funkcionalnosti (dakle čitljivosti i prepoznatljivosti) teksta napisanog na hrvatskom jeziku. Glavni cilj ovog istraživanja je definiranje tih parametara i oblikovanje tipografije prema njima. U uvodu, dao sam kratki presjek razvoja hrvatskog jezika i pisma, te tehnologije nastanka pisma i fontova nekad. Predstavio sam softver za proizvodnju fontova DTL FontMaster koji je danas jedan od najnaprednijih i na čijem razvoju sam sudjelovao. Proveo sam predistraživanje najčešćih slova, kombinacija i oblika slova koja se pojavljuju u tekstovima na hrvatskom jeziku. Ono mi je pomoglo u definiranju parametara za glavno istraživanje, traženju ključnih estetskih parametara za oblikovanje pisma koje bi bilo prilagođeno hrvatskom jeziku. Istraživanje je potvrdilo moje pretpostavke i pokazalo da ti parametri zaista postoje i da se mogu definirati, te da njihova implementacija, prilikom oblikovanja, pozitivno utječe na estetiku i funkcionalnost (dakle čitljivost i prepoznatljivost) teksta napisanog na hrvatskom jeziku. Prikazao sam da hrvatski jezik ima svoje gramatičke, pravopisne i znakovne specifičnosti ali i da treba imati specifičnosti i u svojoj likovnoj formi. Važan je rezultat ove disertacije, uz parametre koji su vrijedna informacija za buduća oblikovanja, je font Amalia koji je svojim oblikovnim karakteristikama prilagođen zapisivanju hrvatskog jezika.

Abstract in english: | Script is a constituent element of language; it must adjust to the context of language as much as language adjusts to script variation. Noting this interdependent relationship as its conceptual foundation, my research hypothesis states that typefaces, as a visual record of the Croatian language, exhibit wide variations in appropriateness. By defining aesthetic parameters which are essential to scripts that are well adjusted for usage in the Croatian language, the subsequent implementation is able to elevate the aesthetic value while promoting overall functionality of printed Croatian language or text. The research objective is to create a methodology to define such parameters, followed by the design of a typeface that is informed by the defined characteristics. The introduction consists of a brief overview which chronicles the development the Croatian language, script and its relationship to historical methods utilized to create letterforms and fonts. This is followed by a survey of contemporary technology used for font production with emphasis on one of the most advanced software packages utilized, DTL FontMaster; a product in whose development I participated. The initial pre-research I conducted resulted in the identification of the most common letters, letter combinations and the shapes most common to letters appearing in the Croatian language. This identification served to define the parameters for the main research, highlighting aesthetic characteristics that are essential in the design of a script that is well adjusted for the Croatian language. The research confirmed my assumptions, demonstrating not only the existence and clear definition of the parameters, but more importantly that the subsequent implementation in the design of a typeface has great positive influence, both functionally and aesthetically. The inquiry called attention to the grammatic and orthographic specificity inherent in the Croatian language; it proved that this specificity should be reflected in the visual form as well. The main outcome of this dissertation, besides the definition of parameters which are valuable for the future design of typefaces, is the custom font Amalia, which exhibits characteristics in the overall design and details of individual letterforms that are well adjusted to visually record the Croatian language. |
