Abstract

Abstract in english: The theme of the designer as author represents a vital part of the graphic design profession, in which designers are involved in a process that is more than just a generic communication of client’s messages, where designers often provide the content and form of the final design product. This thesis gives a comprehensive introduction and an insight in that area of the design profession. The notion of designer as author lies in the possibilty that designers can also operate as mediators—that they can take responsibility for the content and context of a message as well as the more traditional means of communication. As a conclusion of this thesis, it is determined that there are four basic types of designer as authors: 1) The designer who largely involves his/her personal beliefs in their design work. 2) The designer who works extensively with his clients, providing them with relevant and influential advice, interpretation and content for the final design product. 3) The designer who has a unique signature style under which clients commision his/her work. 4) The designer who is fully responsible for the content and context of their design work.
