Abstract

Abstract in english: Minimalism or Minimalist Art, occoured as an art movement in the second half of the 20th century, specifically from 1960. to 1975. From the artistic point of view it is a movement wich discards social commenting and personal expression of the artist. On the other hand, from the graphic point of view, it can be defined as a movement that reduces a particular object or a few of them to the minimum number of colors, textures, shapes and lines. As such, it is implemented in all aspects of cultural and social life, as well as in the area of the photography. Precisely this aspect of minimalism is the main subject of this master thesis. Through its definition and historical development, with appropriate examples, from its appearance to the contemporary photography, all of its components are elaborated. However, main point of interest in this master thesis is one of the key elements of minimalism - free / negative space in photography. It is shown and explained what is it that makes the space so powerful tool in creating visually effective, intriguing, and the content and context-rich images. By highlighting its features, it is explained how small changes in the composition, such as shifting the balance from the positive to the negative space, can change the entire experience of the image, and why is it so? All features of negative space are not always applicable for the same goal, neither are they unique in all types of photography, which is why their application is elaborated through the various genres of photography.
