Abstract

Abstract in english: The subject of this thesis is stereography – the effect of spatiality i.e. three dimensionality on a photograph that was taken and presented in a particular way. In this thesis processes that create the illusion of three dimensionality of the photographed object will be demonstrated and explained. Stereography is a special technique of taking photographs, that allows the observer to experience the space through the photo, the way the brain sees it by transferring information from both eyes. In the theoretical part of the paper the origin of stereography will be discussed, as well as it's use throughout the history, from before the invention of photography, to the present. The first stereographs from the 19th century, and the later ones, which were commercialized at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century will be described. The ones of a later date, that are used for achieving better visibility in various branches of science, or as a useful tool in e.g. aerial photographing for military purposes, will also be described. The working principle of the stereoscope will be explained and illustrated through selected museum specimens. The ways of creating stereoscopic images today and in the past will be described, along with an explanation of phenomenon that happens in the eyes and in the brain, and which allows the viewer to perceive stereoscopic images. The characteristics of stereoscopic cameras will be explained, as well as the method of presenting and viewing stereoscopic images. As a practical example, selected stereoscopic images and author's photos will be presented.
