Abstract

Abstract in english: | Japanese comic book, more often referred to as manga, is a popular form of massproduced medium that is consumed by people of any age, and its popularity continues to grow. The answer to how this medium evolved during the Japanese history of isolation, later with strong Western influence, and why it became so loved by masses lies in its impressive visual characteristics, expressiveness and simplicity, along with stories that draw their readers in to another reality. From its beginnings as early religious scrolls and meticulous wood-block prints, manga evolved into a massive industry, and its main objective is to entertain and educate. Even though manga was exposed and influenced by the Western comic book, it still largely differentiates from it. The magnitude of its cultural function is beyond imaginable since manga impersonates its nation's society and culture. The medium is used not only to tell a story with a large variety of genres, but also as an effective way of transmitting information, be it advertisement or educational material. Its wide usage resulted in a large audience, and therefore it is not strange that people of all age groups read manga regardless of its genre being targeted for middleschoolers or adults. When there is interest in a particular story, manga will surely find the way of telling the story in a visually interesting and melodramatic style. |
